D-dimer Test

At Vivaris Health are dedicated to improving people’s health and as part of that we provide a range of testing and health screening including a D-dimer Test.

A D-dimer test is a simple blood test that can help determine if you have a blood clotting condition.

What is D-dimer?

D-dimer (or D dimer) is a fibrin degradation product (FDP), a small protein fragment present in the blood after a blood clot is broken down by the body’s own clot dissolving mechanisms called fibrinolysis.

Under normal circumstances, D-dimer is not present in the blood or if it is, it is at a very low level. However if detected at higher levels it means your body is forming and breaking down significant blood clots.

What does a positive D-dimer Test mean?

A positive D-dimer test would indicate someone has a blood clotting condition. These conditions include :

  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): Deep vein thrombosis is a blood clot that develops in a vein deep in your body. The clot may partially of completely block blood flow through the vein. Most DVTs happen in your lower leg, thigh or pelvis. They can however occur in other parts of your body including your arm, brain, intestines, liver or kidney.
  • Pulmonary Embolism (PE): A pulmonary embolism is a blood clot in your lung. This happens when a blood clot in another part of your body (often your leg or arm), flows through your bloodstream and becomes lodged in the blood vessels of your lung.
  • Stroke: A stroke happens when a blood vessel in your brain becomes blocked or burst.
  • Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC): DIC causes too many blood clots to form in your body, what can cause organ damage and other serious complications.

How does a D-dimer Test Work

One of our technicians will take a simple pin prick of blood from your finger.

This blood sample will then be placed in a Premalabs PL Medi machine which will provide results within 15 minutes.

How much does D-dimer Testing Cost

The cost for a standalone Myocarditis test is €100 to €150 depending on which of our clinics you attend.
